Benji’s Animal Adoption Barn Named In-Network Partner with Best Friends Animal Society
SWEENY, TX — It has already been an amazing week at Benji’s Animal Adoption Barn, and we’re thrilled to share more exciting news! BAAB has officially been named an In-Network Partner with Best Friends Animal Society, the largest animal welfare organization in the United States.
Best Friends Animal Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a national leader in ending the killing of cats and dogs in America’s shelters. They operate the nation’s largest sanctuary for homeless pets and support a vast network of shelters, rescues, and spay/neuter organizations working toward the same mission: making every shelter in the country no-kill.
By becoming an In-Network Partner, BAAB joins this powerful national coalition of lifesaving organizations. We now have access to industry-leading resources, collaboration opportunities, and support systems that will strengthen our work here in Sweeny and help us save even more lives.

The Heart Behind BAAB
Benji’s Animal Adoption Barn (BAAB) was born from a moment of deep compassion and an unshakable commitment to make a difference.
It all started when BAAB’s founder, Leigh Ann Thornton, was a college student. She attempted to adopt a dog but quickly realized her living situation wasn’t ideal. As she was leaving the shelter, she witnessed an elderly man surrender a matted, neglected dog. A shelter worker took the dog roughly, tossing him into a cold concrete kennel. The dog’s yelp cut through the air, leaving an undeniable mark on Leigh Ann’s heart. Walking away was not an option.
Determined to intervene, Leigh Ann insisted on adopting the dog immediately, taking full responsibility for his medical care. After a much-needed bath and grooming, the once unrecognizable animal transformed into a lively, beautiful poodle. The instant recognition in his eyes confirmed that he had found his person. She named him Benji, after a beloved childhood stuffed animal, and from that moment on, he became a devoted companion.
Years later, when life took a dark turn, Benji proved to be more than just a pet—he became her protector. In a moment of danger, he leaped to her defense, allowing her to escape an abusive relationship. With nothing but Benji by her side, Leigh Ann started over, forever bound by the love and loyalty that had saved them both.
For fourteen years, Benji remained a guardian, a confidant, and a best friend. When it came time to say goodbye, the grief and loss were immeasurable. It was then, upon learning about the current condition of her town’s animal shelter, that Leigh Ann discovered her purpose—to honor Benji’s legacy by rescuing and protecting animals in need.
Benji’s Animal Adoption Barn is more than a shelter; it is a promise. A promise to fight for those who have no voice, to rescue the mistreated, to save the injured, and to love the abandoned. Every animal that finds safety at BAAB carries forward Benji’s legacy. Stepping into BAAB means stepping into a story of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication.
